Natural properties of Merino wool
Merino wool starts its life as the fleece of the Merino sheep. A type of sheep that is most common in Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and South Africa. Its wool is popular all over the world because of its softness, breathability and temperature-regulating properties. Plus Merino wool is 100% natural, renewable and biodegradable. All those amazing natural qualities make Merino wool extremely comfortable to wear. Let us tell you a little more about the properties of wool.
Temperature-regulating
Unlike synthetics, Merino wool fibres are active fibres that respond to changes in your body temperature. So when you’re cold, wool keeps you warm and it keeps you cool when you’re warm.
Breathable
Merino wool is one of the most breathable fibres that can absorb large quantities of moisture vapour and then let it evaporate. No clingy clothes again, you keep cool and dry.
Antibacterial
Merino wool is naturally antibacterial, which means less sweat on your body. Merino wool even absorbs sweat’s odour molecules, which are released only upon washing. No sweat, no stink. Stay fresh!
100% natural
Merino wool is 100% natural, renewable, and biodegradable. Unlike synthetics, Joe’s 100% Merino wool clothes do not leave any microplastics in our oceans.
Soft on your skin
The Merino wool fibres used by Joe (16.5 – 19.5 micron) are extremely fine and much more flexible than traditional, coarser, wool fibres. That is why Merino wool feels so soft and sumptuous on your skin. Definitely not scratchy!
Retains shape
Merino wool’s natural elasticity helps clothing to stretch and spring back to its original shape. Joe items never lose their shape, no matter how often you wear them.
UV protective
Evolved over millions of years to protect sheep better against the elements, Merino wool absorbs UV radiation. Just like the sheep you will be protected against the sun.
Colour fast
Merino wool will not fade. Guaranteed. Black will always be black, blue will always be blue, green will always be green, red will always be red. Well, you get it. For ever and ever.
Fire resistant
Wool’s natural structure makes woollen items exceptionally flame resistant. While cotton, for example, ignites at 255°C, Merino wool will not catch fire until 590°C. Obviously, we still recommend you keep away from fire, even when wearing Joe!
100% biodegradable
Wool fibres (or 100% woollen clothing) that are disposed of will naturally decompose. Within just a few months or years micro-organisms will ‘dissolve’ the wool fibres.
100% renewable
Renewable sources are endlessly regenerated by nature and will not get exhausted. Merino sheep produce new fleeces every year, which makes wool a completely renewable fibre.
100% recyclable
Wool is easy to recycle. It is one of the most sought-after recycled textiles to be converted into new durable products like clothing, mattresses, and soft furnishings.

But if you do need to wash your Joe, easy peasy. All Joe’s are machine washable on the wool setting (at no more than 30°, max 600 rpm.).
