The Miraculous Micron

Joe uses ultrafine, superfine and extrafine Merino wool for its essentials. The difference is in the micron count. One micron equals one millionth of a metre, and refers to the diameter of the Merino fibre. The lower the micron count, the thinner the fibre, and the softer the wool feels on your skin. The reason? Thin fibres are more flexible, and caress your skin on contact.

Light weight

Joe’s thin pullovers. At 170 to 310 grammes literally lightweight. First level of coziness. The first pullover you get out when seasons change.

Mid weight

A textbook pullover. At 260 to 560 grammes a little heavier and warmer than their thin cousins. Great for autumn and winter.

Heavy weight

Our warmest Joes for when temperatures are at their lowest. At 450 to 950 grammes your Joe turns into your personal heater that will help you through any winter.

Sustainability

Sustainability and Joe go hand in hand. Let us tell you why:

- Joe stands for slow fashion. Meaning we do not bring out seasonal collections, but only styles that will last you all year round for many years. For the same reason we don’t “do” sales and do not keep stocks that must be destroyed by season’s end.

- All our styles are made of Merino wool, if not fully at least partially. Wool is one of the most sustainable materials used for clothing. It is all natural, fully biodegradable, plastic-free and recyclable. And not unimportant – we only use Merino wool produced by non-mulesed sheep.

- When dyeing, we always go for the most sustainable process that uses as few chemicals as possible. Our dyeing process is ‘bluesign’-certified. The lack of chemicals is one of the reasons why our Joes hardly pill.

- All our packaging is made of 100% biodegradable cardboard and recycled and recyclable plastics.

- And lastly: with our fits that are constant and dependable (not so easy with woollen items as you might think) and our smart size calculator we have minimised the number of returns.

WHAT TO EXPECT

A classic Oxford weave with a mix of white and blue yarns (50/50). This makes the structure of this dress shirt a little coarser. Of course half of the yarns (the blue ones) are of 100% extra fine Merino wool. It wouldn’t be a Joe otherwise, would it now. The white yarns are Tencel, a man-made product from Eucalyptus wood pulp. This makes the white crispier than if we’d use only wool.

Also in combination with Tencel Merino wool is perfect for all seasons. The unique qualities of Merino wool are a guarantee for ultimate wearing comfort, no matter how hot or how cold it gets. As good as wrinkle-resistant. A light touch up with your iron is enough. And before you ask – of course this dress shirt is machine washable.

50% MERINO WOOL, 50% LYOCELL (TENCEL)

At 17.5 micron, this wool is even softer than our usual extrafine wool. Merino wool is known for its heat and moisture absorbing qualities. Merino wool keeps heat in, and keeps heat out, which makes it ideal for both summer and winter (and a firm favourite not just among mountaineers).

Merino wool has many fine qualities:

  • It retains its shape. No matter how often you wear your Joe.
  • Merino wool is colour-fast and will never fade.
  • Merino wool is elastic, so you will always look sharp.
  • Merino wool is antibacterial and does not absorb odours. Not even after long periods of wear.

This is also why Merino wool doesn’t have to be washed: just airing your pullover out overnight will make it smell fresh again. Still, we advise you to wash your Joe’s at least twice a year to deter moths. Simply throw Joe into the machine, and select the wool program. The structure and fineness of our Merino wool make Joe soft and non-scratchy.

How to care for Merino wool

Thanks to Merino wool’s antibacterial qualities, you don’t have to wash your Joe very often. Just air your Joe outside for a night, and he will be ready for wear the next day!

Still, we recommend washing your Joe every now and then. You can do this simply and easily on the wool wash cycle in the washing machine (30° maximum, spin cycle no more than 600 rpm). Take a look at the maintenance instructions below for best results.

Take care of your Joe

  1. Wool wash at 30° and 600 rpm max
  2. Use wool detergent, no softeners
  3. No tumble drying
  4. Dry flat
  5. Iron away with a little steam
  6. No bleach
